Jersey Steamer Carpet & Drapery Cleaning Services in Mercer, Monmouth, and Ocean Counties
At Jersey Steamer, we often try to give advice that helps homeowners keep their favorite carpets, couches, love seats and drapes looking their best for years to come. While some of our advice may seem a bit obvious, other times, our advice often is met with incredulity. This often is the case when we warn people about the damage that pollen season can do to both carpeting and upholstery.
From the East Windsor to Rumson and down to Toms River, NJ areas, pollen season is one of those times of the year when everything outside gets coated with a fine yellow powder. It coats cars, laundry hung to dry outside, and our houses’ exteriors. And, when we go out for a stroll on the lawn or on the sidewalk, our shoes pick up that pollen and promptly track it back on the carpets once we come back home.
It may seem pretty innocuous, as we don’t often think that pollen gets onto carpets into the quantity that it does, but it’s far from inconsequential. While you may not actually see the bad effects of pollen from one single trek outside, repeated occurrences of tracking in pollen can permanently discolor your carpet. After all, pollen is yellow. And brown. And green. If you are the owner of a cream carpet, and you keep tracking in tiny multicolor particles of pollen all over your carpet, your carpet will eventually look like a stained, brown-yellow mess in places where you regularly walk.
Moreover, pollen also tends to be a lot more damaging to carpet fibers than you’d think. Because it’s so small, it tends to get pushed deep into the carpet, where it often will end up wearing away fibers at the very base of the carpet. Since pollen is so tiny, it can’t even be picked up with standard vacuums or swept away with a broom. In fact, regular vacuuming actually can push pollen deeper into the carpet instead of lifting it out.
Of course, some carpets are more likely to experience damage from pollen than others. Carpets that are light in color are more likely to get discolored from pollen, especially if they are located in high traffic areas. Carpets that are made out of delicate fibers and have longer fibers are more likely to experience pollen-related wear and tear than carpets that are made for rugged use. Lastly, it should also go without saying that shag rugs tend to get damaged way more easily than any other type of carpeting and therefore need more care.
So, what’s the best way to prevent ongoing damage or possibly even reverse some of the discoloration done by pollen? The answer is simple – get it professionally cleaned.
